Everyone’s energy bill goes up during the winter months. If you are looking to save a little bit this year, check out these helpful tips for keeping your energy costs down. These tips are low-cost or no-cost and are simple changes that can add up in savings.

  1. Take advantage of the sun’s heat. When the sun is out, open up the curtains and allow the sun to heat your home. Close them at night to reduce the chill coming off the windows.

  2. Check for drafts and cover drafty windows. Use a heavy duty, clear plastic sheet on the inside of drafty windows. Make sure it is tightly sealed, and add insulating drapes or shades to windows that still feel drafty after weatherizing them.

  3. Seal leaks. You can find air leaks in utility cut-throughs for pipes, chimneys, recessed lights, and unfinished spaces in places like cupboards and closets. Add caulk or weather stripping to seal air leaks.

  4. Adjust temperatures. By adjusting the temperature on your thermostat to even just a couple degrees lower can save you on your heating bills. You can also turn down your thermostat to as low as comfortable during the day and then adjust it forward 10 degrees at night while you are sleeping. electricity-bill

  5. Maintain your HVAC system. Schedule a clean and check with us to be sure your furnace is running efficiently. Replace your filter once a month or as-needed.

  6. Got a fireplace? Keep your damper closed unless you have a fire burning. An open damper allows the heat in your house to escape right through the chimney. You can reduce heat loss from your fireplace by opening the nearest window slightly (1 inch at most) and close all the doors leading into the room. Lower your thermostat to 55 degrees.

  7. Don’t forget about your water heater. Turn the temperature of your water heater to the warm setting (120 degrees).

  8. Decorating your home for the holidays? Use LED holiday light strings to reduce the cost of lighting your home during holidays.
