Each sign below is described the way you would notice it from inside the house, followed by the usual causes, what is safe to check yourself, and when it is time to call for furnace repair.

1. It short-cycles: runs a minute or two, shuts off, restarts

Short cycling looks like a furnace that cannot make up its mind. It lights, the blower comes on, and a minute or two later it shuts down, then starts again a few minutes after that. The most common cause is a clogged filter: restricted airflow overheats the heat exchanger and the limit switch shuts the burners off to protect it. A dirty flame sensor, a furnace that is oversized for the house, or blocked registers can do the same thing. Replace the filter and open every register first. If the short cycling continues, the limit switch or flame sensor needs a technician.

2. It blows cold or lukewarm air

A furnace blowing cold air is the most common no-heat complaint we hear. Start with the thermostat: if the fan is set to ON instead of AUTO, the blower runs between heating cycles and pushes room-temperature air through the registers. Next, check the filter. After those two, the causes move into technician territory: an igniter that is not lighting the burners, a gas supply problem, a flame sensor shutting the burners off seconds after ignition, or a heat exchanger issue tripping a safety. If the blower runs but the air never warms, call.

3. The burner flame is yellow or flickering instead of steady blue

Look through the burner compartment window while the furnace is running. A healthy gas flame is steady and blue with a small lighter tip. A yellow, orange or flickering flame means incomplete combustion, usually from dirty burners, a venting problem or a cracked heat exchanger disturbing the flame pattern. Incomplete combustion produces carbon monoxide. This is a stop-and-call sign: turn the furnace off at the thermostat and call for service rather than running it until the appointment.

4. Your carbon monoxide detector sounds, or there is soot or rust streaking on the cabinet or vent

A carbon monoxide alarm is not a maybe. Get everyone out of the house, call 911 or your gas utility's emergency line from outside, and do not go back in until the home has been cleared. Soot streaks on the furnace cabinet, rust staining below the flue connection, or a scorch mark around the burner door are the silent version of the same warning: combustion gases are getting out where they should not. Both mean the furnace should stay off until a technician has inspected the heat exchanger and venting and tested for carbon monoxide.

5. Your Nicor gas bill climbs with no change in habits or weather

Compare this month's Nicor Gas bill to the same month last year, not to last month. If usage is up and the weather and thermostat setting are not, the furnace is burning more gas to do the same work. Common causes are a dirty burner or heat exchanger, a blower that has slowed, a thermostat that is calling for heat longer than it should, or a furnace that is short cycling and paying the ignition cost over and over. A bill that keeps climbing is a furnace that is wearing out a part somewhere; a diagnosis finds which one.

6. Banging, screeching, rattling or booming

Furnaces make noise, but new noises mean something. A boom or bang a few seconds after the thermostat calls for heat is delayed ignition: gas builds up in the burner compartment before it lights, which stresses the heat exchanger every time. A screech or squeal is usually a blower motor bearing or a belt. A rattle is often a loose panel or a blower wheel that has come out of balance. A metallic pop or ping as the furnace heats and cools can be normal duct expansion, or it can be a cracked heat exchanger flexing. Loose panels are yours to tighten; everything else on this list is a call.

7. Some rooms are cold while others are warm

If the furnace runs and the utility room is warm but the bedroom at the end of the hall never gets there, the problem is usually airflow rather than heat. Check that supply and return registers in the cold rooms are open and clear. After that, the causes are a blower that has lost speed, a filter that is choking the system, ductwork that has come apart in the attic or crawl space, or a damper or zone control that has stuck. Uneven heat is rarely an emergency, but it gets worse through the winter and it is often the first sign of a blower motor on its way out.

8. The thermostat and the furnace disagree, or you keep resetting the system

If the thermostat says it is calling for heat and the furnace does nothing, or the furnace runs when the thermostat is satisfied, start with fresh thermostat batteries and a check that the thermostat is set to HEAT. If that does not fix it, the fault is in the wiring between the two, a failing thermostat, or the furnace control board. The same goes for a furnace that only runs after you flip the power switch off and on: the control board is locking out on a fault, and the reset is hiding the cause rather than fixing it. Reset once, then call.

9. A burning or musty smell that lasts past the first fire-up of the season

A dusty, burning smell for the first hour of the first heating cycle in the fall is normal; it is summer dust burning off the heat exchanger and burners. A smell that persists past that, comes back on every cycle, or smells like hot plastic or electrical insulation is not. Musty smells point to moisture in the ductwork or a clogged condensate line. Electrical smells point to a motor or wiring overheating. If you ever smell gas, treat it as sign four: leave the house and call the utility from outside.

10. Water pooling around a high-efficiency furnace

A high-efficiency furnace with white PVC vent pipes produces water as part of normal operation, and that water leaves through a condensate drain and trap. When you find a puddle at the base of the cabinet, the drain line or trap is almost always clogged with sediment, not a leak from a pipe overhead. A clogged condensate line will eventually shut the furnace down on its pressure switch. Clearing the line is a quick repair; letting the water sit corrodes the cabinet and can damage the control board that lives right above it.

What to Check Before You Call

These five checks are safe for any homeowner and clear up a real share of the no-heat calls we get in the first cold week. Work through them in order.

  1. Thermostat. Set to HEAT, fan on AUTO, target temperature a few degrees above the room. Replace the batteries if the display is faded or blank.
  2. Filter. Pull it and hold it to a light. If you cannot see light through it, replace it and give the furnace a few minutes to cool before restarting.
  3. Furnace power switch and breaker. The switch on or beside the furnace cabinet looks like a light switch; make sure it is on. Check the panel for a tripped breaker and reset it once. If it trips again, stop; repeat trips mean an electrical fault.
  4. Gas valve. The handle on the gas pipe feeding the furnace should be in line with the pipe. If it sits across the pipe, the gas is off.
  5. Airflow and venting. Open every supply and return register, and step outside to confirm the PVC intake and exhaust pipes are clear of snow, ice, leaves and nests.
