What Is a Ductless Mini-Split?

A ductless mini-split is a heating and cooling system that delivers conditioned air directly into a room without using ductwork. It has three main parts: an outdoor condenser/heat pump that sits on a pad or wall bracket outside the home, one or more indoor air handlers mounted on a wall (or ceiling, or floor), and a refrigerant line set that runs through a small hole in the exterior wall connecting the two.

Single-Zone vs. Multi-Zone Systems

How Mini-Split Installation Works

Every install follows the same seven-step process:

1. Site assessment. A technician visits, looks at where indoor heads can be mounted, where the outdoor unit can sit, how to route the line set, and what the electrical situation looks like.
2. Zone and sizing plan. We design the zone layout, size each indoor head to the room's load, and write up a clear quote.
3. Mount the indoor air handlers. Mounting brackets are anchored to wall studs; air handlers go up at the right height for proper airflow distribution.
4. Set the outdoor condenser. Either on a poured pad or on wall-mounted brackets, level and clear of snow drift / debris.
5. Run line set and electrical. Refrigerant lines, condensate drain, and the electrical disconnect run from outdoor unit to each indoor head, hidden in line-set covers where they're visible.
6. Vacuum and charge. We pull a deep vacuum on the refrigerant lines, then release the factory charge from the outdoor unit (Daikin ships pre-charged for the standard line-set length, with adjustments for longer runs).
7. Startup, test, and walkthrough. Every mode tested (cool, heat, dry, fan), pressures verified, and we walk you through the remote and app so you actually know how to use the system.

Mini-Split Installation Cost in Illinois

Do Mini-Splits Work in Illinois Winters?

The Daikin Atmosphera is rated for 100% heating capacity at 5°F and verified continuous operation down to -13°F. That covers the deep-cold portion of every Illinois winter we've ever had. The Oterra and Entra series have lower cold-temperature heating range (5°F-65°F outdoor air for heating mode) - they're great as supplemental heat or as primary heat in milder shoulder-season conditions, but they aren't the right choice if you're planning to heat the home solely with the mini-split through January.
